Historic center of Cortona

Highlight • Historical Site

Cortona is one of the jewels of the Val di Chiana. Wandering around the paved alleys of the historic center is like stepping back into the Middle Ages. It enjoys an exceptional position: it is in fact located at 500 meters above sea level, on a hill from which you have a magnificent view of the hilly Tuscan countryside.

Church of San Cristoforo

Highlight • Religious Site

In this church, in the sacristy, in the priest's house and his perpetual house I grew up.
My uncle Don Antonio and his sister, Aunt Anna, lived there and I remember well the smell of incense mixed with that of summer.
I will always carry it with me.

Fortezza del Girifalco

Highlight • Castle

Located at 651m above sea level, the Medicea or Girifalco fortress is located at the top of the hill overlooking Cortona (AR), a little higher than the basilica of Santa Margherita.

It was built in 1556 by Gabrio Serbelloni and Francesco Laparelli from Cortona at the behest of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo I de 'Medici. The fortress stands on the ruins of a previous one from the 12th century which was built on the remains of Etruscan walls.

Basilica of St. Margaret

Highlight • Religious Site

The church stands at the top of the hill in an enchanting position. On the site of the current church there was a small church built by the Camaldolese monks in the 11th century and dedicated to San Basilio. The church was damaged during the Sack of Cortona in 1258 and rebuilt in 1288 by Santa Margherita and was dedicated not only to San Basilio, but also to Sant’Egidio monaco and to Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. Santa Margherita, in a room at the back of this small church, lived the last years of her life and died there in 1297. She was buried in the small church of San Basilio. Immediately after Margherita's death, the Cortonese, next to the small church, built a larger church based on a design by Giovanni Pisano and in 1330 they moved the body of the Saint into it.

View from Piazza Garibaldi

Highlight • Viewpoint

Country of origin of many historical figures but also of the cyclist and singer-songwriter Jovanotti, Cortona stands on a hill and with its Piazza Garibaldi (a small roundabout) allows you to have a breathtaking view of Lake Trasimeno and Mount Amiata, not far away. From here begins the pedestrian area of the town, once you have crossed the door towards the Cathedral, the Palazzo Comunale and the picturesque alleys of the centre.
