Via del Vaiolo Scenic Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Via del Vaiolo is a beautiful winding asphalted road that descends quickly between olive groves or vineyards and Mediterranean scrub from the village of Nibbiaia (275 m asl) to the coast where it meets the ex-SS1 Aurelia that connects Livorno to Castiglioncello.
Via del Vaiolo offers more than a scenic spot and is particularly beautiful in spring when the colors of the blooms add to the bright green of the meadows and trees and the deep blue of the sea in the background.

Boccale Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Boccale castle is a manor that rises south of Livorno, along the coastal road to Quercianella, in the stretch of coast called "Boccale" or "Cala dei Pirati".
The original nucleus of the Boccale castle is represented by a watchtower (also known as Torre del Maroccone or Torre del Diavolo), built by the Medici in the sixteenth century, perhaps on the remains of a pre-existing structure built by the Republic of Pisa in medieval era.
At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the tower was significantly transformed; it was incorporated into a neo-medieval style residence, complete with battlements and became the property of a private family.
The complex, today, consists of a rectangular plan body, covered by a sloping roof and surrounded by three small round towers. On the front closest to the sea stands the ancient Medici's tower, square in shape.

Via Aurelia Coastal Road

Highlight • Cycleway

Unfortunately, the road from Miramare (southern outskirts of Livorno) to Rosignano Solvay is squeezed between the cliff and a steep slope upstream and has no room for a cycle path. Therefore, for the cyclist who wishes to go south and is not interested in traveling along a beautiful but busy coast , it is advisable (at the traffic light immediately after the Livorno hospital area) to detour towards the hilltop villages of Gabbro, Castelnuovo della Misericordia, Rosignano Marittimo and finally descend to the plains at Rosignano Solvay. There are continuous ups and downs (always below 300 m), but the road is shaded and with little traffic

Calafuria Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Calafuria tower is an ancient watchtower located south of the outskirts of Livorno, along the coastal road "Aurelia" (the former State Road # 1).
Its construction dates back to the 16th century with the aim of protecting the coast from raids by Barbary pirates; later, when its purely defensive functions ceased, it was used to control the coast in order to counter smuggling. For this reason it was also restored at the beginning of the twentieth century with the reconstruction of the roof and the perimeter gallery at the top,
The building has a square plan, with a body of almost 8 meters on each side supported by a large scarp wall; the access is located above this mighty base. The tower, about 20 meters high, is closed by a projecting gallery and a roof with four sloping pitches.
Restoration works are currently underway; therefore it cannot be visited.

Next to the tower of Calafuria and the bridge of the same name, there is the Calafuria Nature Reserve, a real paradise for hikers and trekkers: a large area that climbs the nearby hill, devoid of human settlements and rich in gorse, aromatic plants, scrub shrubs Mediterranean, pine trees and a fauna that lives undisturbed there.

Setting out in the late afternoon for a very short ride at a slow trot, I found myself in the hills, lengthening the route section by section ("a little more, just a few kilometers"), but the cool air and the rare pleasure of pedaling smoothly pushed me all the way to Livorno. And so I managed to reach home once …
