Fort of Santiago da Barra

Highlight • Historical Site

Although the first fortification defending Viana Bar is believed to date back to the time of King Alfonso III, the Roqueta Tower is the oldest visible structure. It was built in the 15th century and completed during the reign of King Manuel I, which is why it bears the monarch's coat of arms on its façade.
This military fortress, with a polygonal plan and trapezoidal walls, reinforced by triangular bastions, circular sentry boxes, and a moat, was commissioned during the reign of Philip I. The main entrance to the fortress leads across the wide bridge over the moat to a round-arched doorway flanked by pilasters crowned with the coat of arms of King João de Sousa (Governor of Praia de Viana in 1700) and topped with the Portuguese coat of arms on the cornice.
Inside, the main building has a rectangular floor plan, three portals, one in the center, and the usual architectural decorations, including the royal coat of arms. On the north side is the Chapel of Santiago da Barra, formerly the Chapel of Santa Catarina, with a rectangular choir, a pedimented frontispiece, and a bell tower on the right. Next to it is the former powder magazine, a square building with a round portal and triangular pediment.

Campo da Agonia, Viana do Castelo

Highlight • Settlement

An important festival and event venue in the region, located between the Sanctuary of Senhora da Agonia and the Fort of Santiago da Barra.
As a symbolic site in Viana do Castelo, it has great cultural and religious significance, especially during the Senhora d'Agonia Festival.

On practically every corner you can comfortably drink a café or uma cerveja. By default, a café in Portugal is an espresso. If you want a big café, you have to order a café grande or café americano. With the cerveja, of course, it's great to choose the "beer of the north".
