Alte Waage (Leer)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Old Weigh House at Leer's commercial port was built in 1714 as the last building in the Dutch Neoclassical Baroque style in East Frisia.

With the granting of market rights in 1508, Leer also received the right to weigh.
The Reformed congregation secured this right, as the first Leer weigh house was housed in the bell tower of the now-demolished St. Liudger Church until 1570.
In 1570, the weigh house was relocated to the Leda River, thus becoming the nucleus of the later port economy. Initially, the weigh house was housed in a simple wooden building.
This became dilapidated over time and was replaced by the spacious new weigh house in 1714.
In 1865, under pressure from merchants, the Kingdom of Hanover abolished the Reformed Church's weighing monopoly associated with the weigh house and transferred it to the city.
In 1921, the Association for the Protection of Local History acquired the weigh house, which it still owns today. Today, the building houses a restaurant.

The Old Weigh House is a two-story brick building with a double-hipped roof in the Dutch High Baroque style, with neoclassical features. The façade is strictly structured by colossal pilasters and simple, large windows.

The double-hipped roof, the ridge turret with a clock and open lantern, the dedication stone, and the sundial are based on Dutch Baroque models.

Leer City Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

Leer is considered the most important shopping city of East Frisia. It describes itself as a gate Ostfrieslands and is located at intersections of the modes of transport road, rail and river.

The old town is considered the most "valuable" in the region due to the good condition of its historic houses. Four castles, numerous town houses and churches from several centuries can be found in the city.

Leer Sea Lock

Highlight • Structure

The sea lock on the Leda in Leer means that the harbor is independent of the tide. Without it, the port could only be used for flooding, because the Leda has a tidal range of about three and a half meters. The lock was built in 1903 and last expanded in the 1970s.

Leer Pedestrian Shopping Street

Highlight • Settlement

There are no typical "East Frisian houses" at this point. This is also not the old town. This point is the pedestrian/shopping street in Leer.

The fantastically colorfully painted facade of the Bünting Coloniale teahouse right next to the museum and the main building is absolutely worth seeing. The facade shows myths and legends that are all deeply rooted in the history of the East Frisian region around Leer. Citizens, the city and companies participated in the selection of the 50 local motifs.
