Main Church of Monsaraz

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of Monsaraz, or Church of Our Lady of Lagoa, was built in the 16th century and rebuilt on two occasions, once following the earthquake of 1755 and once a century later.

This church has a façade with two towers and an ogival head. Inside, it houses a 14th-century marble tomb carved with 14 saints and where the remains of Tomás Martins rest.

Outside, next to the church, stands an 18th-century pillory (stone pillory) crowned by a Manueline globe. Opposite this pillory is the Church of Misericórdia and, next to it, the Museum of Sacred Art.
