Schwerin Central Station

Highlight • Rest Area

Schwerin train station
Often only the princess lives in the palace. In Schwerin, the palace belongs to all train passengers. Behind the magnificent facade of the Wilhelminian building, travelers at Schwerin train station can see a tidy interior. Signage and information are exemplary,
even non-locals can find their way around.
Brief history of the train station:
1847: Schwerin receives its first rail connection with the line to Hagenow
1889/90: The current train station building is built in the representative Wilhelminian style on the site of the previous building from 1847.
1920s: Construction of the station underpass and lowering of the entrance hall
December 2005: After three and a half years of modernization, the train station was officially reopened.

The fountain "Rescue from Sea Distress" by the artist Hugo Berwald (built in 1910/11) on Grunthalplatz, as its name suggests, commemorates the dangerous work of the sea rescue service – specifically the work of the founder's husband. The fountain, which depicts water-spouting sea lions, a rock, a boat wreck, and a naked youth with a naked girl rescued from the water by him, has only been in its current location since 1929. Previously, the bronze sculpture was located in the Old Town Market. The founder, Emma Mühlenbruch, a commercial councilor and widow of a cigar dealer, is said to have fainted at the unveiling of the fountain due to the "immoral" depiction of the nude figures.

I would almost say that the parallel street, Mecklenburgstrasse, is the shopping mile but yes, you can let that pass 😅

Heinrich-Mann-Straße runs directly toward the palace. At the highest point of the street, at the intersection with Goethestraße, you can see what I mean.

Schlosspromenade Schwerin

Highlight • Trail

Schlosspromenade Schwerin - The Graf-Schack-Allee and the Schlosspromenade am Burgsee form one of the most important entrances to downtown Schwerin.
As part of the preparations for the Federal Horticultural Show in 2009, the palace promenade was redesigned. Due to the difficult building ground on the lake shore, the edge of the wall is both a constructive and a design element. The balcony on the promenade creates quality of stay.
The clear edge of the promenade stages Schwerin Castle. The planting between the promenade and Graf-Schack-Allee was tailored to this location.

Bertha Klingberg Statue

Highlight • Monument

On the occasion of the Federal Garden Show 2009, the redesigned square on the southern shore of Lake Burgsee in Schwerin was named after Bertha Klingberg. A plaque on it commemorates the honorary citizen. On June 2, 2010, a life-size bronze statue made by Bernd Streiter was erected at the edge of the square.

Bertha Klingberg was born in Hamburg, but grew up with her grandparents in Bützow, in today's Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. She discovered her love for nature early on. At the age of 14 she began an apprenticeship as a flower maker in Rostock. The death of her husband in World War I brought Bertha Klingberg and her son to Schwerin. After the end of the war, she earned her living as a flower woman at the Schwerin butcher's market. She always wore a traditional Rehna costume, which contributed to her status as a real "original". The people of Schwerin affectionately called her the "flower woman". In 1990, now at the age of 91, she collected 17,000 signatures in Schwerin for the appointment of her beloved city as the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Because of this achievement, in 1993 she was the first and only one to receive the ring of honor from the state capital of Schwerin. In 2002 she was made an honorary citizen of Schwerin by the city council. On November 7, 2005, Bertha Klingberg died in a nursing home in Schwerin at the age of 107.
