Making a water measuring system visible and tangible

The water gauge house in Dorsten an der Lippe was previously almost completely hidden behind ivy and almost non-existent in the minds of Dorsten residents. Things have changed since May 5, 2022. The building was visually and technically upgraded.

Today there is nothing to remind us of the once almost overgrown small structure on the Lippe dike: two large LED displays on the roof of the water measuring system and another display on the western side of the building show, among other things, information about the water level, water temperature or air humidity. The new facade of the house makes it clear that the building belongs to the Lippeverband and fulfills a technical function in flood protection. For this purpose, the gauge house was designed with a water motif on all sides. With Brigitte Stüwe, an artist was brought on board who, as a Dorsten resident, knows her city and has already helped design other projects on the Lippe.

Thanks to the new displays, visitors now have the opportunity to read the water level of the Lippe directly. Although the cubist structure is only around 2.5 meters high - including the displays on the roof it measures around 3.5 meters - its important function means it is of great importance for flood protection. The water level has been measured here since 1951. The water gauge system, which has existed for over seventy years, was last expanded with an additional measuring device in 2006.

Today, the technology inside the gauge house records the water level and flow speed of the Lippe. Important insights for flood forecasting can be gained from these two measured values. The average water level at the water gauge house is 5.03 meters. On average, 31 cubic meters of water flows through the lip per second. There are a total of six water level measuring points in Dorsten, five of which are on tributaries of the Lippe.

Water Buffaloes in Hervester Bruch

Highlight • Natural Monument

n the heath just outside the town of Dorsten in the northern Ruhr area, a low-lying wetland with streams, ditches and ponds invites you to observe a species-rich animal world. Several viewing platforms and a small viewing tower offer good views of white storks, heck cattle and many special and rare birds. The area known as Hervester Bruch is part of the large nature reserve around the Wienbach, which flows from Wulfen near Dorsten into the Hammbach and shortly thereafter into the Lippe.
