Altenau Brewery

Highlight • Structure

A nice break on your bike tour! Just taking a quick look and sipping a delicious malt beer is a good start. If you want to delve deeper into the beer topic, a tour of the brewery is highly recommended. In this case, you should agree / register your break here beforehand. ;)

To rest is more of a restaurant than a snack. There is also a fireplace room to linger. Friendly staff serve tasty meals.

Fairly constant and not too steep gradient. Very nice road surface and relatively little traffic.

Wonderful connection from the Okerstausee to Clausthal-Zellerfeld. The asphalt in top quality, scenic and very easy to master with gradients of 1% to 3%.

View of Hirschler Teich

Highlight • Viewpoint

Well visible from the B242, this pond is now visible from the road due to the clear cutting.

View of the Harz Mountains

Highlight • Viewpoint

Very nice view of the surrounding mountains after the climb from the Sösetalsperre. Unfortunately there is very little forest, as is typical of the Harz.

Sperberhaier Damm Aqueduct

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

The Sperberhaier dam is an aqueduct of the Upper Harz water shelf. It serves to channel the water of the ditch over the valley of the Sperber shark on the Clausthaler plateau.

The Sperberhaier dam was built to meet the rapidly increasing demand for water for the water wheels of the Clausthal mines. The water crossed the dam in a run on the dam crown. The gutter is only visible at the western end today. Its hydraulic power was up to 1000 liters per second at peak times.

Immediately south of the Sperberhaier dam runs the B 242. Approximately in the middle of the dam, the B 498 flows into the B 242. Both federal roads then run together to the eastern end of the dam, where then the B 498 direction Altenau turns.

Like all buildings of the Upper Harz water shelf, the Sperberhaier dam has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.

Exactly what the Harz Hochstraße, for example, is unfortunately far too rare for: narrow, narrow, curvy. Absolutely recommended, especially downhill towards Altenau 😁
