From 1144 to 1246, the lords de Rumphorst appear in the sources as ministers of the Bishopric of Münster. In 1466, the lords of Buck sold it to Johann Lydermann. In 1498/99, two farmsteads were first mentioned. The castle was located near the Lüttke Rumphorst farm, which had been in the possession of the Scheffer-Boichorst family since 1646.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle site was still recognizable as an island surrounded by a moat with a building on it; it was then called "die Borg".
