The chronicle of the Münster bishop Florenz von Wevelinghofen reports that he had a fortification named after him built in Telgte. Another chronicle adds that a keep was erected in 1372. After the construction of the castle, several noble castellans moved into the town in the 14th century, playing an important role in the town's defense. Around 1450, the castle was probably already in ruins. In 1569, the bishop renounced ownership of the castle, which was still visible as a ruin at the time.
