The Sandakan Memorial sits under the shade of surrounding trees in Strathdale Park. It's a peaceful spot for the memorial that honours the memory, suffering, and sacrifice of approximately 2,400 Australian and British Prisoners of War helped by the Japanese during World War II. The memorial has the inscription of thousands of soldiers who ultimately perished from starvation, illness, brutal work conditions, or during the Sandakan Death Marches.
