Fort Crèvecoeur is still a military location today. At the time of the Eighty Years' War (1587), States troops built a sconce on the site of the current fort to control shipping traffic on the Dieze river. The Spaniards took possession of the sconce and built a real fort here in 1599. But the soldiers who were supposed to defend Crèvecoeur had not received their pay for months and allowed themselves to be willingly bribed by Prince Maurice. Maurice had the fort strengthened and since then the States had the say here. Today it is a military training ground.
