As happened in Osini, the extraordinary torrential rains, which lasted uninterruptedly from the morning of the 14th to the 19th of October, caused the destruction of the village of Gairo, forcing the inhabitants to abandon it.
From the old Gairo, three hamlets were born: Gairo Sant'Elena, which constitutes the current municipal seat, and Gairo Cardedu and Gairo Taccu Isaira (today known as Gairo Taquisara).
