The wild rhubarb growing along streams and rivers is poisonous. It is actually the common or hybrid butterbur (Petasites hybridus). For a long time, butterbur was known as a medicinal plant in Central Europe. Unlike garden rhubarb (Rheum hybridus), wild rhubarb (Petasites hybridus) – also called butterbur – is not suitable for consumption. The leaves and stems of the plant, which grows wild on riverbanks and in floodplains, contain carcinogenic and liver-damaging substances.
