The Danube Canal near Riedlingen (often also referred to as a flood relief channel) is a defining element of the river landscape in Upper Swabia. It primarily serves to protect Riedlingen's old town from floods and has an interesting ecological significance. The canal was built to controllably divert the masses of water from the Danube past the town during floods. While the Danube flows in its natural (or renatured) bed directly past the old town, the canal functions as a kind of bypass. It branches off south of Riedlingen and later rejoins the main river.
