The hill was named in honor of Wilhelmina of Prussia (Princess of Orange, wife of King William I of the Netherlands), who was the daughter of King Frederick William II of Prussia. The royal family had strong ties to these areas, and the name itself fit the then-current tradition of naming picturesque spots after members of the Hohenzollern dynasty.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the hill was an extremely popular excursion destination for the inhabitants of Chobienia and surrounding villages. Due to its location on a high escarpment of the Oder river valley, it offered one of the most beautiful views of the Oder proglacial valley.
