Visitors enter Schaumburg Castle through the gatehouse of the outer bailey. Above its Gothic lower level was the bailiff's residence, which was remodeled in the early 17th century. The "Welsh" dome of the gate tower, as well as the half-timbered extension, are additions from the 1908 renovation. The half-timbering, decorated with fan rosettes, partly originates from a burgher's house demolished in Osnabrück. The door to the right in the tower hall leads to a prison, which was installed around 1800. Here, there were two cells that could be heated from an anteroom.
