Hang Sửng Sốt (Vietnamese for "Cave of Surprises") is the largest and most famous cave in Halong Bay. It was discovered in 1901 by French explorers who were so impressed by its size that they named it "Grotte de la Surprise" (Cave of Surprises).

If you look at the large facets on the walls in the back chamber, they are evidence of a large river that once flowed through the cave.

The Sung Sot Cave (Vietnamese: Hang Sửng Sốt), also known as the Surprise Cave, is the largest and most famous cave in Halong Bay, Vietnam. It is located on Bo Hon Island and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The name comes from the first French explorers who entered the cave in 1901. They were so overwhelmed by the sheer size and beauty of the chambers that they called it the "Grotto of Surprises." The Vietnamese name "Sửng Sốt" literally translates to "astonished" or "surprised."
