The etymology of the name Pietracupa derives from pietra (stone), meaning stone, because it was built on a huge limestone formation, the "Morgia," and from the adjective cupa, which in Latin means "barrel," referring to the numerous cave settlements still visible there.
What can be admired is the bell tower of a cave church located in the heart of the Morgia, restored to worship in the last century. Inside, a sixteenth-century crucifix, a stone stationary cross, and an altar made from the millstone of an old mill are preserved.
