Alcedo is a genus within the subfamily Alcedininae (kingfishers), whose members are primarily distributed in the Afrotropics and Oriental regions. Only the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), which is also native to Central Europe, is widespread across large parts of the Palearctic and is also found in South Asia and New Guinea. At one time, nearly twenty species were placed in this genus; now it contains only seven (or, according to another view, eight) species. The remaining species were reassigned to other, closely related genera based on the findings of comparative genetic studies.
