Saint John of Nepomuk was in the service of the then Archbishop of Prague in 1370 and became caught in the crossfire during a dispute between the archbishop and Wenceslas, King of Bohemia and the Holy Roman Empire. Since the archbishop was able to escape early enough, Wenceslas accused him, tortured him, and then pushed him from Prague's Vltava Bridge into the waters (see picture), where he subsequently drowned.
