The Csernovits Castle in Mács, built in the 18th century, has a famous botanical garden. The bodies of two of the Arad martyrs, who were executed on October 6, 1849, Damjanich János and Lahner György, were secretly transported to Mács with the help of the butler of Csernovics Péter (who was Damjanich's brother-in-law), after bribing the executioner, and were buried in the garden for a time.
