It belonged to the Confraternity of the Souls of the Sacred Body, where its headquarters are still located today. Founded in 1394 by sailors who had encountered a storm while returning from England, it was dedicated to the assistance and protection of sailors and merchants. One of its members was Prince Henry the Navigator. This important confraternity performed banking, commercial, and other functions and owned ships that not only belonged to the confraternity and provided services on its behalf, but also defended the coast from pirates when necessary.
The entire façade is decorated with tiles.

Although the current building dates from 1776, the Confraria das Almas do Corpo Santo de Massarelos was founded in 1394 by sailors who survived a storm on their return from England. It is said that even Infante D. Henrique (Henry the Navigator) was a member.
