At the top of the Alto de Santa Maria, the highest point in Tavira, there is an old water tower. The tower was only built in 1931 to provide the city's population with clean drinking water, a technical feat at the time. For the first time, people had running water in their homes. But with the construction of numerous dams in the 1960s and 1970s, water towers like the one in Tavira became redundant.
