The first service was held on Christmas Day 1604 – the Protestants quickly converted two connected houses at the Polish Gate into a church, after previously returning the parish church to the Catholics.
A single-nave building in the late Renaissance style was built, made of brick, partly of stone (the northern wall – a fragment of the defensive walls).
The fires of Wschowa, especially in 1644 and again in 1685, seriously damaged the building. After one of them, the roof was rebuilt into a uniform gable roof, and annexes were built in 1720 and 1773.
