Directly on the northern edge of "Central Europe's largest living moor" lies the Biological Station Murnauer Moos (Ruth-Rosner-Haus). It is part of the nature conservation authority of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district administration.
Expansive flood meadows, remote raised bogs, and natural forests of the Köchel ("rock islands" in the moor) are home to numerous rare plants and animals. Among them are highlights such as the corncrake, the marsh orchid, the small red-eyed damselfly, and many more.
