Until the 1950s, the water from the fountain was considered to have healing powers and mythical significance.
In times of deep popular piety, it was used to treat human ailments, in the firm belief that Saint Ursula had interceded for the water.
According to legend, Ursula of Cologne refreshed herself at this spring on her pilgrimage. Her intercession supposedly gave the water its healing powers.
