Caherconree Summit

Hiking

On the Dingle Peninsula, in Ireland’s mountainous southwest, rises the majestic Caherconree. It is a grand green mountain that boasts stunning sea and mountain views and is named for the Iron Age fort that sits on a spur on its southwestern flank.

At 2,740 feet (835 m) in height, it is the second highest peak in the Slieve Mish Mountains, behind Baurtregaum, the broad mass of which rises to its east. These two, along with Gearhane to the north, comprise a great upland horseshoe surrounding the deep glacial trough adorned by Derrymore Lake and its tumbling glen. Caherconree towers high and steep, lording it over the head of the glen.

A grand mountain peak with a rich history and mythological associations

The ancient fort occupies a particularly scenic spot overlooking the subsidiary peak of Caherbla and enjoying a beguiling blend of mountain, pasture and coast to the west. It is dramatically flanked by steep cliffs and is an atmospheric place. It features in Irish mythology as the fort of Cú Roi mac Dáire, a warrior with magical powers, and features prominently in the story of Aided Con Roi.

The quickest approaches ascend via the fort, starting from the road on the pass between Caherconree and Lack Mountain to the southwest. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be kept on a lead. Routes that tackle the stunning high-level horseshoe that also takes in Baurtregaum and Gearhane usually begin from Derrymore. There’s scattered accommodation both north and south of the range, while there are plenty of options in the town of Tralee.

Caherconree at 835 m (2,740 ft) is the second highest mountain in the Slieve Mish range on the Dingle Peninsula. It is named after Caherconree Promontory Fort from the Iron Age times. The views from here in all directions are, let's not beat around the bush, awesome.
