    Running

Sunrise Camp is a high-elevation backcountry site just below the Sunrise area, with wide alpine views and a quieter feel despite its proximity to one of the park’s busiest hubs. It’s a solid overnight spot or pause point for runners, with seasonal water, a composting toilet, and quick access to the Sunrise Visitor Center for restrooms and ranger info. Snow can linger into July, so be ready for cold nights.

The camp is close to Shadow Lake and can be a good place to catch your breath before the descent to White River Camp.

Burroughs Mountain Loop via Glacier Basin

Embark on the Burroughs Mountain Loop via Glacier Basin, a difficult hiking route that spans 10.0 miles (16.1 km) and demands a significant 3141 feet (957 metres) of elevation gain. You should plan for approximately 5 hours and 43 minutes to complete this challenging journey. As you ascend, you will experience the trail transforming from dense forests into rocky alpine tundra, offering intimate views of Mount Rainier's northeast flank and the impressive Emmons Glacier.

When planning your visit, be aware that this route is considered strenuous due to its substantial climbing and exposure at higher altitudes. Snowfields can linger on the trail, especially on the way up to the Burroughs, depending on the season. Parking is available at the Glacier Basin trailhead, but it's wise to arrive early during peak times as the area can become quite crowded.

This loop is renowned for its truly expansive vistas of Mount Rainier, providing panoramic 360-degree views from the Burroughs that can extend all the way to Glacier Peak and the Olympic Mountains on clear days. Along the way, you will pass Shadow Lake and might even spot wildflowers in bloom during the appropriate season. The diverse terrain and stunning mountain scenery make this a memorable hike in Mount Rainier National Park.
