The name "Prinzenmoor" goes back to Prince Frederick of Denmark, who later became King of Denmark and Norway as Frederick V. The area was reclaimed in 1761 as part of the Geest colonization and named after him.

Originally, the Prinzenmoor was an undeveloped raised bog landscape that was only made usable for agriculture through drainage and settlement. The name is thus a reminder of the Danish rule over Schleswig-Holstein at the time and the targeted settlement policy of that time.
