In the Chiemgau Alps, on the southern edge of the Oberwössener Mulde, which is composed of easily weathered Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks, lies the elongated rock face of the Rauhe Nadel. It is composed largely of resistant siliceous limestone.
The natural forest reserve occupies the steep, north-facing slopes of the mountain ridge. The reserve exhibits a diverse range of forest communities and offers an enormous moisture gradient.
