    Hiking

Picket Post Mountain is located near the town of Superior. The name comes from a former military post that was located at the foot of the mountain. At the top of the mountain there is said to be a mailbox with a logbook of the mountain. At the bottom is the trailhead to the Arizona Trail as well as a trail register and toilets.

Arizona Trail: Passage 17 - Alamo Canyon

    30m

Embark on an easy hike along Arizona Trail: Passage 17 - Alamo Canyon, a route that immerses you in the classic Sonoran Desert landscape. This 3.4-mile (5.4 km) journey, with an elevation gain of 565 feet (172 metres), typically takes about 1 hour and 32 minutes to complete. As you hike, you will encounter towering saguaro cacti standing against rugged mountains and dramatic rock formations. Look north to see Picketpost Mountain dominating the horizon, offering spectacular views, especially as the sun begins to set. The trail leads you through the striking red rock walls of Alamo Canyon.

When planning your visit, be aware that accessing the southern end of this passage often requires hiking in from other trailheads, as some sections are not directly vehicle accessible. The best times to experience this trail are during the fall, winter, and spring hiking seasons, when temperatures are more moderate. Remember to carry enough water for your hike, as reliable natural sources are scarce along this passage, and any water found should be purified before drinking.

This segment of the Arizona Trail showcases a vibrant ecosystem, particularly in springtime when the region comes alive with wildflowers, adding splashes of color to the desert scenery. The route offers a quick yet rewarding experience for anyone looking to connect with the unique natural beauty of the Tonto National Forest. It provides a distinct glimpse into the Sonoran Desert's geology and flora, making it a notable passage within the larger Arizona Trail system.
