The desire for a complete collection of field names Ostfrieslands goes back to the 19th century. In 1878, the "Society for Visual Arts and Patriotic Antiquities at Emden" tried to create a field name collection with the support of the public. After the First World War sent the superintendent Wiard Lüpkes questionnaires for the registration of field names to the pastors, the church councils and agricultural branch clubs in East Frisia.
