The park was once the site of the Bishop's Palace and two parliament buildings, both of which were destroyed by fire.
The two buildings were used as the meeting place of the Legislative Assembly of the United Canada between 1841 and 1866. For this reason, it was declared a site of national historic significance by the Commission on Historic Places and Monuments of Canada in 1949.
