The surface water of Lake Sankelmark flows via the Beek, the Treene, and then the Eider into the North Sea.
But beneath the lake lies a layer of lignite sands, containing large amounts of groundwater, from which 317-meter-deep wells extract drinking water for Schleswig-Holstein.
