Mountaineering
The **Funtensee** is a small mountain lake in the Berchtesgaden National Park in Bavaria and is one of Germany's best-known natural sites. It is located at an altitude of about **1,600 meters** in the Steinernes Meer and is only accessible on foot.
The Funtensee became particularly famous for its extreme temperature values. Due to its location in a closed karst basin, cold air accumulates there, which is why it is considered the **"Cold Pole of Germany"**. On **December 24, 2001**, a temperature of **-45.9 °C** was measured at the Funtensee – one of the lowest values ever recorded in Germany.
