    Hiking

This small nature reserve sits along the shore of the Indian River Lagoon. You can take the straight dirt road down to the water, or choose to do the interpretive trail through the dense vegetation. Either way you're likely to spot some sort of wildlife, especially birds, and possibly an alligator.

Step into a tranquil "Old Florida" experience on the D.J. Wilcox Preserve Trail, a 1.2-mile (2.0 km) hiking route that meanders through diverse habitats like pine flatwoods and mangrove swamps. You'll find yourself surrounded by moss-draped oaks and impressive slash pines, with a boardwalk section guiding you around Gator Lake. This easy trail offers a serene atmosphere perfect for a leisurely walk, taking about 30 minutes to complete with only 6 feet (2 metres) of elevation gain.

Planning your visit is straightforward, but remember to bring bug spray, as mosquitoes can be active, especially on humid days. The preserve is a great option for pet owners, as leashed dogs are welcome on the trails. While the trail is generally easy to navigate, some sections can be damp or bumpy after rain, so comfortable, appropriate footwear is a good idea.

Beyond the natural beauty, the D.J. Wilcox Preserve offers an interpretive nature trail with 14 stops detailing local flora and fauna, plus an observation tower for scenic views. Keep an eye out for various birds and even alligators around Gator Lake. The preserve also holds historical interest, with remnants of the Aubrecht homestead from circa 1925, adding a layer of cultural context to your outdoor adventure.
