As a young man he was very fascinated by the monks of the St. Odulphus monastery in Hemelum. It was in the tenth century that he entered here and learned to read and write. Merk Later he registered under the name Uffing van Workum in the monastery in Werden (near Essen), founded by the Frisian apostle Liudger. This makes it clear that Workum has existed since the tenth century.
