Perched on a ridge overlooking the upper Vara Valley, the village of Chiusola offers a perfect balance of history, architecture, and landscape. Of medieval origins, it was the site of an ancient Malaspina garrison, mentioned as early as 1268, and in more recent times played a strategic role as a customs post between Liguria and the Po Valley. The village preserves the memory of a heroic episode of the Resistance: in 1944, Lieutenant Pietro Borrotzu surrendered to the Nazi-Fascists to save the population from a massacre, a gesture that earned him the Gold Medal for Military Valor.
