This is exactly where the Bechtheimer Gebück runs, which was an old, almost fifteen-kilometer-long land defense for almost 500 years. It was the border installation of the Nassau-Idstein dominion, which stretched between Bad Camberg and the town of Zollhaus. It consisted of a two to three-meter-deep ditch with an adjoining rampart. The actual 20 to 30-meter-wide grove of hornbeams was planted on the "inland" slope of the rampart, seen from the Nassau-Idstein side. These plants were "bent," which meant that the side shoots were bent downwards and intertwined so that they grew together and an impenetrable hedge was created.
