    The Tauber is a river in southern Germany on both sides of the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. It rises at the western foot of the Franconian Heights, flows in a northwesterly direction for about 130 km through the Franconia region and flows into the Main from the left and southeast in Wertheim. It gave its name to the sub-region Tauberfranken that immediately surrounds it.

    In the first documented mentions, the Tauber is referred to as tubri(gowe) (= Tauber(gau)) and dubra(goe).[10] The name is traced back to the Celtic word dubr (or plural: dubra) for water.
