The Flat Rock Brook Red Loop Trail offers a delightful, easy hike through a diverse Oak-Hickory forest, just a stone's throw from Englewood, New Jersey. As you follow the 2.1-mile (3.4 km) path, you'll wander through woodlands and wetlands, often with a cascading stream as your companion, and cross charming wooden footbridges, including the intriguing "Mystery Bridge." With only 169 feet (52 metres) of elevation gain, it's a perfect route for a quick nature fix, taking about 55 minutes to complete.

Planning your visit to the Flat Rock Brook Nature Center is straightforward; the trails are open daily from dawn to dusk and are clearly marked. While no permits or fees are required, arriving earlier in the day is a good idea, especially on weekends, to enjoy the preserve's tranquility. This urban sanctuary is easily accessible and provides a refreshing escape from city life.

This trail is part of the 150-acre Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, a significant remnant of the Palisades Forest, established in 1973 for conservation and education. It's a fantastic spot for birdwatching, with a remarkable array of species like Great Horned Owls and Red-tailed Hawks, and you might even spot red foxes or coyotes. The preserve also features former quarry areas redeveloped with native habitat gardens, adding to its unique charm and biodiversity.
