A very interesting and beautiful hike leads to the small cliff dwellings and storerooms of the Anasazi in Lower Mule Canyon.

Embark on an easy hike along the Mule Canyon Trail to House on Fire, a short adventure that takes you through the South Fork of Mule Canyon. This route covers just 1.0 miles (1.6 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 76 feet (23 metres), making it a quick 26-minute journey. As you walk, you will experience dirt paths and sandy sections, surrounded by rising canyon walls and the sweet scent of juniper, leading you to the iconic 'House on Fire' ruin.

To make the most of your visit, plan to arrive between 10 AM and 11 AM. This is when the sun illuminates the rock overhang above the ancient granaries, creating the illusion of dancing flames. The trailhead is easily accessible from Highway 95, but be aware that while this Komoot route is brief, the full round trip to the ruin often extends to 2 to 3 miles, taking about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to explore ancient history within the Bears Ears National Monument. The 'House on Fire' ruin is a remarkable example of Ancestral Puebloan architecture, where natural light plays a dramatic role in revealing its distinctive features. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like hawks and jackrabbits as you immerse yourself in this historic and naturally quiet landscape.
