Pian di Spagna and Lake Mezzola are very important especially for the survival of migratory birds.
It is a place to stop and rest, where they can find abundant food to eat before tackling long journeys again because it is the crossroads of important migration routes between southern and northern Europe and also with northern Africa.
It is located on the Spluga "corridor", one of the shortest routes for crossing the Alps.
