In 1857 work began on the first shaft for the Ver union. to demolish Boniface. Hard coal mining began in 1861 and continued - with interruptions - until the early 1980s.
Today there are various cultural institutions, a hotel and a beer garden in the facilities around the former shaft 1.
Bonifacius Mine is part of the Industrial Heritage Route.

The operating buildings and the headframe above shaft 1 have been preserved and are used for gastronomic, cultural and commercial purposes. The former Lohnhalle, which is characterized by its neo-Gothic façade design and cathedral-like interior architecture, has been home to the "Alte Lohnhalle" cultural and conference hotel since September 2004.
