With over 40,000 students, the University of Hamburg is the largest university in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the largest research and training institution in northern Germany and one of the ten largest universities in Germany.
It has had its headquarters in the Rotherbaum district since it was founded in 1919. The university is divided into eight faculties that offer over 170 courses.

The main building of the University of Hamburg dates from 1911. Next to it are the two wings, which were built much later. The main building was an Edmund Siemers foundation and was executed by the Diestel & Grubitz architectural office. The wings were designed by Folker Schneehage and donated by the Greve family.
