Between his legs stands a significantly smaller figure of his daughter and later wife, Meritamun (often identified as Princess Bent-Anta). This placement symbolizes the father's protection and royal authority. The statue was originally begun by an earlier ruler (likely Amenhotep III), but Ramses II claimed it for himself (“usurped”), as evidenced by the carved cartouches bearing his name.
