Since commercial clay mining began in Groß Pampau in the 1980s and 1990s, remains of fossilized whales and other marine animals dating back approximately 11 million years have repeatedly surfaced. They sank to the seabed of the ancient North Sea and were embedded, like a "time capsule," in deposited layers of so-called mica clay. Today, they can be recovered, preserved, and exhibited.
