This challenging touring cycling route, the Cascade Lake – Mount Constitution loop, takes you on an epic island-hopping adventure through the San Juan Islands. You'll pedal past San Juan Island's saltwater shores and quiet woodlands before tackling the demanding climbs of Orcas Island. The highlight is undoubtedly the ascent to Mount Constitution, where the historic observation tower offers 360-degree views of the surrounding islands, mountains, and even Canada. Expect a diverse landscape, from coastal bluffs to dense pine forests and alpine lakes, making for a visually stunning and physically rigorous experience.

Planning this difficult 68.6 miles (110.4 km) loop, which involves 4953 feet (1509 metres) of elevation gain and takes around 6 hours and 50 minutes, requires careful consideration of inter-island ferry schedules. Be prepared for narrow, winding roads with steep grades and limited shoulders on Orcas Island, especially on the climb to Mount Constitution. While most of the route is paved, some sections may be unpaved and require extra effort. Parking for touring cycling near San Juan Island National Historical Park is available, but always check local regulations.

What truly sets this route apart is the unique combination of island exploration and the significant physical test of conquering Mount Constitution. The Civilian Conservation Corps-built observation tower at the summit is a landmark in itself, providing unparalleled vistas that make the effort worthwhile. This loop is a fantastic option for experienced cyclists seeking a multi-day touring experience that blends natural beauty with a serious workout, offering a perspective on the San Juan Islands that few get to see.
