Embark on the Laurel Falls Trail, a moderate hike through abundant greenery, where vast plant life and rhododendron thrive. The route gets its name from the mountain laurel shrubs that line the path; if you visit in May, you might even see them in bloom. The highlight is the 80-foot Laurel Falls, a beautiful two-tiered waterfall where you can cross Laurel Branch Stream for unique perspectives. This trail covers 4.7 miles (7.6 km) with an elevation gain of 682 feet (208 metres), typically taking about 2 hours and 13 minutes to complete.
Planning your visit requires some foresight. Parking is often limited and fills up quickly, so arriving early or late in the day, or choosing the off-season, is highly recommended. Remember that a parking tag is required for this area. Also, be aware that the trail is scheduled for an 18-month closure starting January 6, 2025, for rehabilitation work. Always stay alert for bears and avoid approaching any wildlife you encounter.
This trail is a prime example of the rich natural environment found within the Laurel-Snow State Natural Area. The mountain laurel and rhododendron contribute to a vibrant ecosystem, offering a glimpse into the diverse flora of the region. The impressive Laurel Falls itself provides a unique geological feature, making the route a popular destination for those seeking both a moderate physical challenge and scenic beauty.
